Founded in 1948 by Jean-Marie Tardif, the father of the company's CEO and Chairman, Paulin Tardif, Bestar is an industry leader in the design and manufacture of ready-to-assemble home office and home entertainment furniture. Its head office and manufacturing facility are located in Lac-Megantic, Quebec, Canada. The company started by making the first ready-to-assemble furniture in Canada — a small bookcase to hold encyclopedias. The encyclopedias were sold door-to-door. When a customer purchased a set, the bookcase was given as a free gift!
Over the years, Bestar developed the habit of being first in many aspects of its business. After all, our slogan is "Addicted to Innovation". In 1991, Bestar was the first company in the ready-to-assemble (RTA) industry to introduce thermofused melamine work surfaces, an industry standard for durability. In 1996, Bestar became the first RTA manufacturer in North America to gain ISO 9001 certification, a world-class quality control accreditation. In 2000, Bestar is widely recognized as an industry leader in the contemporary design of office furniture.
In Lac-Megantic, our 450 dedicated employees work in our recently expanded 350,000 sq. ft. manufacturing plant. They proudly produce hundreds of thousands of fine quality RTA furniture annually for shipment to consumers the world over. Bestar's products are distributed globally through major retailers in the mass market, office superstore, warehouse club, catalog, and office dealer channels. In 1999, Bestar posted its best-ever year with sales of $81 million and a growth rate superior to that of the industry.
Bestar is a publicly held company traded on the Toronto exchange (TOR: BES).
